Does your truck have a DPF?

It’s every driver’s nightmare — you’re loaded up and ready to work, but your truck throws an engine light and won’t go past 20km/h. That’s exactly what happened when a customer rolled up to Webbie’s Mechanical, frustrated and stuck in limp mode.

The truck had been derated — limited by its onboard system to prevent further damage — and with modern emissions systems, that usually means a deeper issue. Inside the workshop, our techs hooked up the diagnostic laptop and quickly pinpointed the fault: a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) issue.

But there was a catch.

The truck wouldn’t initiate a DPF burn. And the reason? An EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) leak was throwing the whole system off. When there’s a leak, the system doesn’t trust the readings and won’t allow a burn — which means more soot, more blockage, and more downtime.

We traced the leak to the exhaust pipe flange, but the bolts were rusted on tight — properly seized. One had already snapped during removal, and we knew we’d need to drill out the studs to get the pipe off cleanly. It was one of those frustrating, fiddly jobs that could turn ugly quickly if not done right.

With patience (and a few choice words), we got the broken studs out, cleaned the surfaces, fitted a new gasket, and reassembled everything tight and clean. Then came the moment of truth: we forced a DPF burn through the diagnostic system.

Success. The burn completed, the system cleared the fault, and the truck was finally free of limp mode.

The driver left with a clear dash, a clean exhaust system, and the confidence that they were back in business — not just patched up, but properly fixed.

Why This Matters

Modern emissions systems can be tricky. A simple air or exhaust leak can prevent your truck from doing what it’s designed to do, leaving you stranded or derated at the worst possible time.

At Webbie’s Mechanical, we don’t just read fault codes — we track down what’s actually causing them. Whether it’s rusted hardware, cracked pipes, or sensors throwing false flags, we sort it at the source so you’re not back in here a week later with the same issue.
