You just want to get home from the run
A driver was on his way back from Kalgoorlie when he rang after hours. He could hear a noise in a front wheel, and when he walked around the truck he could feel the heat coming off it. All he wanted was to get home and get it sorted — which is exactly the moment a small fault decides whether it stays small.
But this one had been waiting a long time
The Mercedes was long overdue for a service — around 20,000 kilometres past due. That matters, because a wheel bearing on its way out is one of the easiest things to catch during a routine service. Left to run, the heat and noise he was feeling were the bearing in its final stages. By the time it announces itself on the highway, the damage is often already spreading beyond the bearing itself.
So we got in and found how far it had gone
Getting the failed bearing off the spindle meant oxy-cutting part of it away — that’s how seized it was. With everything disassembled and cleaned, we inspected the spindle itself, and there it was: the tip, where the thread and the outer bearing sit, was actually bent on an angle. A caught-in-time bearing is a routine service item. A bent spindle is a different job altogether.
And then the parts became the problem
Here’s where it stung. The parts weren’t available in WA, or anywhere in Australia — it became a six-week wait ex Germany, which is fairly standard for Mercedes and Daimler at the moment. So a fault that could’ve been a quick fix during a routine service turned into six weeks off the road. That downtime is the real cost, and it was entirely avoidable.

Had this truck come in on schedule, we’d almost certainly have caught the bearing before it took the spindle with it.
