We recently loaded up and headed out to a customer’s yard to run our driver training on site, on their own trucks.

There were seven drivers, so Scott and I split the group. Scott took them through the prime mover and the trailers, and I worked through the little rigids with the rest.

We covered the everyday things that keep a truck healthy and a driver out of trouble. How to tilt a cab safely. How to check the oil and what to look for underneath while you’re down there. Checking fan belts. Spotting coolant leaks before they leave you stranded. Reading uneven wear on your tyres, which can tell you whether it’s just the tyre or something like worn king pins, the pins the front wheels pivot on when you steer.

We showed them how to bleed a fuel system too. People run out of diesel from time to time, and when the tank runs dry, air gets into the fuel lines and the engine won’t start until you prime it again. Knowing how to do that yourself gets you moving instead of stuck waiting for someone.

We ran through quick air leak fixes to get you out of trouble on the road, and how to tell the difference between a fault you can limp home on and one you can’t.

Doing it on site means the drivers learn on the actual trucks they drive every day, in the yard they work from. Nothing abstract, nothing off a slide.

If you’d like us to come out and train your drivers on your own trucks, give us a call.
