It started the same way it does for many drivers — just another day on the road.
But then you notice something:
Your diff temperature gauge is climbing higher than normal.
Not by much at first.
Just enough for you to keep an eye on it.
It’s happened before, so you tell yourself it’s probably fine.
But this time… the gauge keeps creeping up.
Higher than you’ve ever seen it.
High enough that you actually back off the throttle because now there’s that uneasy feeling in your gut that something isn’t right.
A few kilometres later, the noise starts.
A deep growl.
A vibration you don’t usually get.
And suddenly the truck just doesn’t drive the way it should.
That’s when you know — you’re in trouble.
The Moment It Rolled Into the Workshop
When the truck arrived at Webbie’s Mechanical, we went straight to the basics:
Drain the diff oil.
Inspect the condition.
Let the oil tell us what went wrong.
The moment we cracked the drain plug, the smell hit.
If you’ve ever smelt burnt diff oil, you know it’s a smell you don’t forget — it sticks with you for days.
It told us everything before the oil even finished draining.
Inside, we found:
- Burnt, contaminated diff oil
- Cooked bearings
- A destroyed crown wheel and pinion
This diff wasn’t repairable.
It had been running too hot for too long.
So… what actually caused it?
This truck was fitted with an older-style diff that doesn’t have an internal oil pump.
These units rely purely on splash lubrication, which works fine — until conditions push the diff harder than the oil can handle.
Once the oil overheats, it loses its ability to protect the bearings and gears.
Once the lubrication breaks down, metal starts wearing metal.
And once that starts, the damage escalates quickly.
By the time the gauge spikes and the noise begins, the damage is already done.
The Fix: A Complete Diff Upgrade
Instead of replacing it with the same outdated design, we fitted a newer-style upgraded diff equipped with an internal oil pump.
Here’s why that matters:
- More consistent lubrication
- Better cooling under load
- Reduced risk of overheating
- Longer component life
- Stronger performance overall
We installed the new diff, replaced hardware, refilled with the correct oil, and checked the driveline end-to-end to make sure everything was aligned and ready to go.
A final test confirmed it:
Smooth.
Quiet.
Running at a healthy temperature.
Exactly how a diff should be.
Back on the Road — With Confidence
The customer left with:
- A truck that drives the way it should
- A diff designed to withstand the work
- Peace of mind knowing the root cause was fixed — not patched
Same truck.
Stronger diff.
A fresh, reliable start.
If your temperature gauge climbs — don’t ignore it.
Gauges are there to protect your truck.
If something is hotter than it should be, it’s trying to tell you something.
Bring it in.
We’ll diagnose it properly and help you avoid a failure that takes you offline for days.
