Every prime mover runs a fuel filter and a water separator. The fuel filter catches rust, dirt, algae and the brass shavings that show up when a fuel pump starts to wear. The water separator does exactly what it sounds like — separates water from your fuel before it reaches the injectors.
There’s a sensor in the bottom of the separator. Miss it on a service and the dash throws a water in fuel code — and most modern trucks will derate.
