That was all the driver said. In fact, when the truck came into the workshop, he didn’t mention it at all, so the overheating was news to us. He’d babied it back, kept the revs down, and got it home without doing any damage. Good call on his part, because that’s exactly what saved the engine.
What we checked first
An overheating truck usually points to something obvious, so we started with the usual suspects.
No coolant leaks anywhere. The system was full of coolant. The thermostat was opening the way it should. The belt was spinning.
By the book, nothing was wrong. Every part we’d normally blame for an overheat checked out fine. But the truck had clearly been running hot, so we weren’t going to leave it there.
Pulling the water pump
With the easy answers ruled out, we pulled the water pump off to have a proper look.
There was the problem. The pump had cracked internally. The impeller, which is the propeller inside the pump that pushes coolant around the engine, had stopped turning. The outside of the pump was spinning with the belt, but the inside wasn’t moving at all.
So the coolant was just sitting there. Plenty of it in the system, but nothing pushing it through the engine to carry the heat away. That’s why the truck kept creeping up in temperature with no leak and no other fault to explain it.
Why this one hides
A cracked impeller is a hard fault to catch from the driver’s seat. There’s no puddle under the truck, no warning light for it specifically, and every gauge and check you’d normally rely on can look completely normal.
The only real symptom is the temperature slowly climbing for no reason you can see. Which is exactly why “she’s just getting a bit warm” deserves a proper look rather than a wait-and-see.
The lesson for drivers
The driver did the right thing twice over. He noticed the temperature rising, and instead of pushing on, he pulled over and let it cool. Then he brought it in gently.
If he’d kept driving on a pump that wasn’t moving any coolant, this could have turned into a cooked engine and a rebuild. Instead it was a water pump and a story worth telling.
If your truck starts running warm for no clear reason, treat it seriously even when everything looks fine. Pull over, let it cool, and get it looked at before it becomes a much bigger bill.
